Parents Evening - 21/22 October 2009

This provided a fantastic opportunity to meet some of the parents of the school and let them know what our current thoughts are on the design. We made a model showing the existing building, the one-storey option and the two-storey option.

We also gave out questionnaires to let everyone know how they can contribute to the process - the more feedback we have now, the more we can take it all on board and design a school that is right for the community.

There are a number of ways you can have your say - post your comments on this blog, write into the school office or email me on nicola.du.pisanie@fcbstudios.com

We will keep doing these information sessions throughout the process and look forward to getting to know you all!

  1. I like both 2 level/2 storey, but unsure of real pluses/minuses of each in terms of best use of space and funding to ensure we get the best we can.

  2. James - thank you for your comments. We have very strict guidelines on the amount of area we are allowed on any option - so on both options we get the same amount of space. Ofcourse there are other issues to consider in terms of cost [e.g. the two-storey option is more efficient in terms of envelope, but has the complications of vent / light chimneys to let the lower classrooms breath!] We are awaiting a more detailed cost breakdown, but from this end, we feel they are probably not too far from each other. There are also educational pro's and con's to both - the single storey - all the classrooms can have direct access to the outside, whilst the two-storey option allows a clear demarcation between community and school facilities. Both have the amazing central band of halls / gathering spaces - creating a very defined and owned 'heart' to the school.

  3. Nicola, Thanks was mainly concerned that we get more "bang for our buck" but if similar costs then I'm happier to led more by the teaching professionals in terms of use of outside teaching areas etc, but wonder whether the outside is used currently? Is there differing areas between KS1 & KS1 and EYFS or will they all be let in as one or can it more flexible for whole school learning?

  4. I vote for the single storey option due to the potential complications of vent/light chimneys! Anticipated building complications usually become very expensive problems. What if the KS1 lower area ends up being a dark area? Natural light is important. What if the vents actually dont let the lower classrooms breathe properly? Circulation of air is important. All classrooms having access to outside space is important.

What are the ideas on the parking problems around the school - dropping/collecting the children?

  5. Thanks for your comments as above - interesting to hear your views. See my latest posting for a full explanation as to where we are on the design options.

In terms of parking / drop-off, we are developing options with our highways consultant, landscape architect and others. We have a few options on the table - all of which allow for the coaches to drive into the site, set down and turn around again. We are also exploring options for parent drop-off, but at this stage nothing is decided and it is looking unlikely. We are in consultation with the Highways Department on these proposals. As soon as we have something concrete - i will post them!
